He is treated very badly by them, like their slave. One day he meets a man who gives him a bag of magic worms. The worms grow a peach on a dead tree. This peach grows absolutely huge. | Dawn of Fear | Susan Cooper | War | 5
Review by: Rick Smith Class: 1 This book was one of the best I've ever read. It's about three boys (Geoffrey, Derek and Thomas) living in a small village in World War 2. They were building a den in a field which was next to a Anti-aircraft gun campsite. However, they kept on being interupted by Nazi Bombers. A gang (which was called the kids from the white road) didn't help, as they trashed everything the three kids made, including their den. For revenge, the three kids planned an attack. The reason I liked this book is because it is full of action and adventure. It deserves more than 5 out of 5. This was the first book I read from Susan Cooper, and I was very impressed with her writing. I hope you enjoyed reading my book review on Dawn Of Fear, written by Susan Cooper.

| Empire of the Sun (senior fiction) | J.G. Ballard | War | 3 | |
Review by: Paul Stevens Class: 3 The book was about a young boy's experience in China during the Second World War. It starts explaining how his life was, living in a big house with servants and a driver, previous to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941. It also tells of his life after the Japanese attack Shanghai, the city where he lives. The boy then spends years in a POW camp waiting to be liberated by the Americans. The story is full of action, suspense, drama and mystery and has a story line that leaves you wanting to find out what happens next. This story shows the true horrors of war and mixes them with the frustrations of a teenager going through adolescence. It tells of prisoners stealing the rations of fellow prisoners and robbing the dead merely to survive. This book is not just for people who enjoy action, war and military type books; this is also for those who are interested in the history of a nation riddled with war, hunger, poverty, disease and crime. Anyone who chooses to read this book will not regret it, and will be riveted to its pages for hours on end. This book hides nothing and exposes everything about the Japanese-Chinese war and the POW camps in which so many suffered for so long. I enjoyed this book because it was so real and interesting and yet it was also a proper story with action and a great plot. JG Ballard has done well to mix real life with an interesting story line and I think he needs credit for a truly great book.

| Black Beauty | Anna Sewell | Animals | 5 | |
Review by: Lesley Gillie Class: 4 Black Beauty is a story about the life of a horse. The book tells of all the good experiences in the horses life, and the bad ones. The book is written as though the horse is telling the story. Black Beauty is a beautiful, well trained horse and no matter what happens to him, he always carries out the orders of his master. There is many themes shown in this book, loyalty, friendship and love to name but a few. It is a definite must for animal lovers. The description in this book is very effective and you can really get a good picture in your mind of what is going on. Black Beauty goes through some pretty harsh times, but also, rarely some good times too. All of this keeps you gripped, as you want to find out what will happen next. I thiought that this book was brilliant and the themes were clear and well presented. Black Beauty is a book for readers of all ages, whether you are reading yourself, or as a group. Younger readers may have a little trouble with some of the words but apart from that it is a really good book

I would recommend this book to people who like to find out information on Germany and its past.

Review by: Emma Turnbull Class: 3 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first book in the Harry Potter series. This one is about a young boy called Harry Potter who lives with his aunt and uncle because his parents were killed when he was a baby. Harry does not remember his parents and his aunt and uncle had told him they were killed in a car crash and he was the sole survivor, but his parents were actually killed by an evil wizard called Voldemort. Harry has no idea his parents were magical until, on his eleventh birthday, Hagrid comes to get him. Then Harry begins to prepare for his magical adventures at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He makes friends with Ron Weasley, a small ginger boy, and Hermione Granger, the smartest girl in his year, and together they have many adventures. This is a great book and I recommend you read them all!!!

Review by: Jade Carpenter Class: 2 I have read the book "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". I thought it was a great book and l couldn't put it down! The book is about Harry's third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is warned that there is a mass murderer on the loose who has escaped from the wizard prison Azkaban and there is a chance that he wants to kill Harry. This person's name is Sirius Black but Harry finds out that Sirius is his Godfather and was his parents' best friend. At the School he has some new subjects; "Care for Magical Creatures" and "Divination" His best friend Hagrid teaches Care for Magical Creatures and he is delighted about that! Harry's best friend Hermione on the other hand has picked loads of subjects and she has to stop time to go to them all! The guards of Azkaban called Dementors have to keep an eye on the school to see if anybody tries to break in! I recommend this to anybody who has a good imagination! It was brilliant SO PICK IT UP AND READ IT!

Review by: Katie Rennie Class: 3 This is a brilliant book by J.K. Rowling. It is about Harry Potters 5th year at his Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It seems to Harry that all is good until he is taken to a secret safe house as a bad power is back to life and needs something of his. This is a big book and takes a while to read it, it is quite hard to understand some bits but they all add up at the end. In a way it does end up as a happy ending except for a death of somebody very close to Harry. This book was carried on through the 4th book I would recommend this to 1st years and upward as it is hard to understand what exactly is going on .

| Kasper In the Glitter | Philip Ridley | Magic/Witchcraft | 5 | |
Review by: Katrina Connell Class: 1 I chose this book because the cover was like no other cover I had seen before, it was magical. I liked this book also because it had a great storyline, because it was about these 2 people Kasper and Pumking who lived in a big house in the middle of nowhere just out side of the city.Kasper was never allowed to go in the city because Pumking thought he would make friends and he did one day when he finally caught the thief who stole all his yellow roses(his fave coulor was yellow.) There is also another character called Heart-throb - he was the one Kasper followed into the city because he stole her gold brooch. He gets lost and tries to find his way home but he can't till the end.My fave character was Heart-throb because he reminded me of Danny Zuco out of Grease because he wore the same clothes and he had the same hair and he spent most of his time brushing it. I would recommend this book to any one who likes a magical tale and believe me you will not put it down till its finished

| Witchopoly | John Vornholt | Fantasy | 4 | |
Review by: Laura Colebrook Class: 2 The book was very enjoyable and I enjoyed it thoroughly and even though the detail was short it was still good at leaving you at cliff hangers. The book had a lot of jumping to one person then the other and then another and back again. I could read that book again and again. It was a hard book to follow and I really thought I wouldn't catch up but I eventually did. Don't get put off by not being able to follow the first 4/5 chapters because you will catch up and when you do it will all make so much sense. The book is about a witch(Sabrina Spellman)who forgot Fathers Day and made it up by giving her father a game(witchopoly)and whatever happens in the game happens to Sabrina, her dad and their cat (Salem). Salem becomes magic and turns into a monster and Sabrina's dad loses his to Salem. They get transported to all these dangerous places where bad things keep happening. It is worth reading and telling about. The genre is fantasy because of the magic and the shuffling from realm to realm.

It is worth reading and telling about. The genre is fantasy because of the magic and the shuffling from realm to realm.

Review by: Michelle Douglas Class: 2 The hobbit likes to lead a quiet, peaceful life until a wizard comes to take him on a quest to find a dragon. He goes but does not like the scary adventures waiting for him. This is an exciting story but often sways from the plot, making it difficult to understand. Overall I'd give it 8/10 and I'd definitely recommend it to someone who enjoys fantasy adventures.

Review by: Enid Still Class: 2 I think The Hobbit is an excellent book. It can get really tense, but it can also be really sad. I like it when Bilbo (the Hobbit) plays riddles with Gollum in the tunnels under the mountains, if Bilbo won the riddles then Gollum would have to show Bilbo the way out of the tunnels, but if Gollum won he could eat Bilbo. I also like the war of the Five Armys right near the end.

| The Hobbit | J.R.R. Tolkien | Fantasy | 5 | |
Review by: Sebastien Murray Class: 1 The Hobbit starts in the Shire with a character called Bilbo Baggins. BThe famous George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl will never tire the minds of bookworms around the world. The concoction of everything that you could possibly find in your home. Anti-freeze, curry powder, some paint for colouring, large tubs of farmyard animals pills even George's mother's perfume. The great transformation that took place to George's grandmother is amazing. She jumps off her seat and perches in mid air and then she begins to grow. She grows through the bedrooms and the attic even the roof. George doesn't only feed the grand concoction to his grandmother he feeds it to the farm animals. Once the marvellous medicine is finished, he tries to make another batch of it but it proves too difficult. An excellent read for any ages, anytime and anywhere. It is sure to giggle your sides through laughing so much! ilbo is quite a respectable person and is polite and has good manners. He doesn't want anything to do with adventures. One day a man comes to call at his door. It was his old wizard friend Gandalf Stormcrow. They have a bit of a chat and then arrange for them to meet at Bilbo's house for tea the next day. The next day there's a knock on the door and Bilbo, thinking it is Gandalf, opens the door to find a dwarf. The dwarf is invited in and has some beer and cake. Then there's another knock on the door. It is another dwarf. This goes on until there are twelve dwarfs. Then at last Gandalf comes and they have a chat. Apparently Gandalf and the dwarves are going on an adventure to rescue some gold from the keep of a terrible dragon called Smaug. They all go to sleep at the house. The next day Bilbo finds nobody is there. He spends ages wiping up the mess the dwarves had made when they left. Bilbo just relaxes and sits down when Gandalf comes in through the door and tells Bilbo that he is coming as well. They all go and have many, many adventures. They met lots of creatures including giant spiders, Goblins, Elves and even a man that could turn into a bear. In the end Bilbo gets back home after a really adventurous, scary and tiresome journey. I thouroughly enjoyed this book and must admit it's the best book I have ever read. I would recomend this book for people that like adventures, fantasy and exciting books.

Review by: Lesley Cook Class: 1 Charmed Life is all about a girl called Gwendolen and her brother Cat (Eric). They are on a boat when it hits a post and falls to pieces. They go to live with Mrs. Sharp and then to a large castle owned by a man called Chrestomanci who is a powerful enchanter. Gwendolen doesn't like living there so each morning she plays a nasty trick at the breakfast table. Eventually she escapes to another world and her replacement, Janet, is very nice, kind, and unable to do any magic so she finds it very hard trying to act as Gwendolen would. In the end Gwendolen won't come back because she has been made Queen in another world and Janet is quite happy to stay.

Review by: Andrew McEwen Class: 1 The book I read for World Book Day was the Lord of the Rings trilogy written by J.R.R Tolkien. The genre of the book I read was fantasy. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is all three Lord of the Rings books in one. T he book is mainly about a Hobbit called Frodo Baggins who carries the ring of power and seeks to destroy it before the dark lord Sauron can get his hands on it.I would recomend this book to someone who understands strange and complicated words but it is a great book which kept me up to the early hours of the morning reading away happily.

Review by: Tom Allan Class: 3 The Fellowship of the Ring ( Book 1): I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 14 because there some complicated words and phrases to understand. I think I understood the book more because I watched the film a while ago but if I hadn't seen the film I wouldn't have understood it very well. The main theme of the book was a man had found a ring that pretty much ruled the world, and he left it in the possession of his grandson. But he was made to get it destroyed and the journey to the middle of the earth had started. I gave this book 5/5 because it is so enjoyable and fun to read that it made you read on and on. The story can get very tense, but that makes the book so good. GREAT BOOK!!!

Review by: Ewen Campbell Class: 3 The Fellowship of the Ring ( Book 1): An excellent read! It has been written magnificently the detail of characters and setting is great! I have started to loath the film as it misses the immense plot of the book. This book is the beginning of the journey of Frodo Baggins, a hobbit, from the Shire who acquires a magical ring from his predecessor. The ring is one of many, but this is the most powerful and the dark lord has risen again and seeks this ring to become even more powerful. Throughout the book more characters are met and are described so well that you feel you know them. This book engulfs you with the powerful emotions and events that occur. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the sequels. I would recommend this book to anyone who can read! But unfortunately the literature is a bit complicated and so I recommend it to the teenage group and upwards.

Review by: James Dickson Class: 1 The Fellowship of the Ring (Book 1): The Fellowship of the Rings is a really good book because it is adventurous, full of action and also has some sad bits. The saddest bit of the book is when Gandalf the Grey died after fighting the big flame bull and then Boromir died after Orocus the Lieutenent of Orcs killed him. The main characters are Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry and Pippin, the four hobbits, Strider the man, Gimli the dwarf and Legolas the elf.

Review by: Hamish Ker Class: 3 The Return of the King (Book 3): The third book of the series, which has become more popular since the release of the films, was a great finish to the story. I felt this book was the best of the three, as it has more going on than in the first two. However, you wouldn't be able to enjoy it if you haven't read the earlier books (or seen the films.) The book continues on the journey to destroy the ring, and keeps almost separate the two parts. One, taking the ring into Mordor, and the other following the other two Hobbits, which is where the large battles take place. The book does take a long time to read, but is well worth it. I feel it is the best book of the three, but all of them are good.

This is very hard for Elsa as everyone around her seems to be falling apart. Elsa is a comedian in her own right and loves to tell jokes but when nobody laughs at them anymore this begins to get her down. This is one of Wilson's greatest and funniest novels and it could really appeal to anyone that is up for a laugh and wants some great entertainment. The Story of Tracy Beaker is a good story but is probably better for someone of a younger age. She hardly ever does as she is told. Tracy's worst enemy is Justine Littlewood. Tracy thinks up lots of dares for everyone. She has lots of friends at the dumping ground as well as at school. The book is probably only for girls, but for all ages. The author of Tracy Beaker has made her really adventurous. The TV series about her is brilliant and I watch it all the time at home. Tracy Beaker is the best because if it wasn't for her I wouldn't have the nickname Beaker. Tracy is the best kid in the world and I like her name as I have the same name as her. | Dustbin Baby | Jacqueline Wilson | Friendships/Relationships | 4
Review by: Carmen Falla Class: 1 The book is about a girl who was born to a young mother, her mum did not know what to do so she left the baby in a dustbin. The baby was later found by a big man who worked in the fast food shop near the dustbin. He called an ambulance and he and the baby were taken to hospital. The man kept the dustbin baby for a few days then it was time for her to be adopted. She was adopted by a young couple who couldn't have children. They called her April. When April was six everything went wrong. Her dad started staying out late and it turned out he was having an affair. Soon after this clicked into her mums head she commited suicide. This causes a lot of problems. I think this was a really good book. I recommend this book to people between the ages of 12 and 14.

| Tribes | Catherine MacPhail | Friendships/Relationships | 5 | |
Review by: Lisa Miller Class: 2 I read Tribes and loved every part of it. It involved a lot of teenagers, so I could understand their reactions to situations. The main character was a teenage boy called Kevin Davidson. He had just moved in to a new town and was trying to fit in but found it very dificult with line-dancing parents and a dizzy little sister. All the boys in this town were part of a gang. The gangs were always fighting and getting revenge. Kevin's dad was always telling him not to join any of these, but when the main gang the "Tribe" save him from the "Rebels" he has no choice. As he passes the secret insane initiation test he discovered that it is a lot more difficult to get out. He soon becomes best friends with the leader of the "Tribe" Salom and becomes caught up in all of these fights. Then Kevin discovered a dark secret about Salom and what happens when people get on his bad side. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone.

It shows how difficult it can be to make the right decisions and also explores the hurt and pain involved in teenage life. This is a good read and ideal for teenage girls. This family/romance novel is well written and a brilliant sequel to Girls Under Pressure. Jacqueline Wilson has created yet another brilliant novel.

| Girls In Tears | Jacqueline Wilson | Friendships/Relationships | 5 | |
Review by: Emma-Jane Jeffrey Class: 2 Girls in Tears was a gripping book written by Jacqueline Wilson. It is about three fourteen year old girls Ellie,Nadine and Magda. Ellie is very self-conscious and is really worried about her weight. Nadine is a very deep character but inside she has loads of secrets. The last and youngest character is Magda, she is still thirteen but is the most mature out of all three. The main part of Girls in Tears is when Ellie and her boyfriend Russel break up. The worst part of the book for Nadine is when she meets a guy on the internet called Ellis and when she went to meet him he turned out to be twice her age. Fortunatly for Magda nothing bad happend to her it was all to her best mates. They all had to stick by each other through good and bad times. I give this book 5/5 because it is one of the best books I have ever read. I would recomend this book to any teenage girl between the age of 13-16.

| Junk | Melvin Burgess | Friendships/Relationships | 4 | |
Review by: Zoe Froggatt Class: 2 The first thing about this book which makes an impact is the cover. An acid green background, bright orange hypodermic needles and vivid dandelions are not exactly what you would call an everyday decorative scheme, but as it goes the lurid mismatched cover belies completely the story which lies inside.* Few writers can create such an honest account of a fictional set of characters, but the talent of Melvin Burgess is enough to make what at first can occasionally seem a cast of quite one-dimensional characters into such an intricately woven storyline. The story begins when Tar, a 14-year-old boy and victim of a violent father, runs away from home to Bristol. His girlfriend,Gemma, who is sick and tired of her parents' tyranny, joins him a week later, and together they live in a squat and live relatively serenely...that is, until they meet Rob and Lily, and get reluctantly involved in a spiral of drug addiction, crime and prostitution, until something has to give... This book is extremely well written from the main characters' points of view, displaying in a crushingly accurate light the growing feelings of desperation as Gemma and Tar realise that they have to find a way out of their deadly destructive habits. The honesty and frankness of the author could almost make this book a horror in its own way, and it is greatly recommended for those who would like a change from the normal run of the mill teen trash which authors such as this most often end up churning out. * NB - the cover described has been replaced by the design seen above

Review by: Michelle Whittle Class: 4 Dear Nobody is about two teenagers who are 18 and are about to go to University. They are madly in love with each other and have been together for a long time. One day, Helen finds out that she is pregnant. She doesn't tell anybody about it and soon she becomes very alone and has no one to talk to. She doesn't want the baby and tries to forget about it, but soon her mum finds out and makes the descision for Helen to have an abortion. When they arrive at the clinic Helen can't go through with it and leaves. She tells Chris that she is pregnant and the two of them prepare to have a baby. It was never going to be an easy choice but it is made harder for Helen when her mum turns her back on her, as she disapproves of Helen having the baby. This book is brilliant. It looks into real life and the situations that some young girls can get into. It shows how Helen overcomes the fear of finding out that she is pregnant and learns to accept and look forward to it. This book is a great read and I would definitely recommend it.

Review by: Caitlin Brooks Class: 1 Dear Nobody is about two people in love who are torn apart by their jobs. Helen is a loving and caring person and she would make a good mother to the baby she is expecting. She loves Chris but will be forced to leave him as she goes to music college and he will not be there on the birth of the baby. Chris wants the baby but doesn't want to let Helen go as he loves her so much. As they leave the only person Helen has is her unborn baby. Helen and Chris have to make a life changing decision whether in the future they will be together with the baby or apart at university starting a career. I liked this book because it had so many feelings in it and had conflict between two people in love. I would recommend this book to readers between the age of 13-16 .

As Helen is no longer thought of by her mother, Helen is determined to be no stranger to their child. Chris and Helen try and sort out their conflicts and decide whether they should stand together or apart? I liked this book as it is heartwarming and about family. Review by: Lianne McGuigan Class: 2 This book is the best I've EVER read!! It relates very well to teenagers and is full of surprises. Feeling Sorry For Celia is about a girl called Elizabeth who writes a lot of letters. Her best friend is Celia who is always doing something stupid and surprising. This book shows the making of new friendships and breaking of old ones with a little bit of a twist. Jaclyn Moriarty really makes you believe that she is a teenager herself as she relates so well to teenage life. She makes each character shine in their own ways. So I recommend you read this book if you like funny books about teenage life.

Review by: Morgan Prichard Class: 1 The book was about some girls called Ellie,Magda and Nadine who are all best friends. Each of the girls has a problem, Ellie thinks she is fat and ends up going on a diet but at the end she is happy with herself and stops the diet. Magda is really popular with the boys but then a really horrible one called Mick tries to take advantage of her but when she gets away him and his friends call her names and make fun of her. Nadine is really thin and Ellie is jealous of her but they don't fall out, Nadine goes for an interview thing to be a 'cover girl' for a magazine but doesn't get it but she's not that bothered. | The Past, The Present and the Loud, Loud Girl | Karen McCombie | Friendships/Relationships | 5
Review by: Claire Crosby Class: 1 This book is about this family who have a weird life. There is a dad, a big sister called Linne who is 17 and is a 'neat freak': she doesn't like the way her house is all cluttered in the living room and other rooms around the house apart from her bedroom, which is pure white. Then there is Rowan, who is 15, she is a very weird teenager, who likes every glittery thing in sight. Her bedroom is a 'shrine to anyone who enters'. There is also Tor, who is 7. He adores animals, his bedroom is like a zoo, with animals in tanks and cages. Then there is Ally, who is 13. She is the main character. She thinks that everyone in her family are weird and she is the only one who turned out 'normal'. In this storie Ally goes to school one day and gets sent to Mr Fishers office, (the head master). She thinks that she has done something wrong, considering the fact it is before 9.00am. When she gets there she finds that she is going to be stuck with a new girl. She has to take her round the school. Ally and her best friend Sandie have to do a History project. They are told that the new girl Kyra has to help. One day after school they have an argument and spill black paint on the project.Next day they have to put it up on display - little do they know Kyra has fixed it. They all become friends. I think this book is really good, I would say that it was for girl teenagers.

Review by: Joanna Brooks Class: 1 The Snake Stone is a book about a boy called James who is adopted. His parents who adopted him are very proud of his talent for diving and he is training for the Junior National Diving Competition. They are also very good parents for taking in James at a young age and bringing him up.James had a stone since he was born but he had never thought about being born for some reason and until he discovers the Snake Stone he had never really thought about whether his real mother wanted him or even where she was.He thought about her and he realised if he wanted to find his future he would also have to find his past. This leads him to go on a journey which leads him to his true home. I liked this book as it was mysterious and you didn't know what was going to happen next and also because it is about family. I would recommend this book to people who like reading! - and for people the age of 12-14.

| Me and Ma Gal | Des Dillon | Friendships/Relationships | 4 | |
Review by: Sebastien Murray Class: 2 Me and Ma Gal " is about two boys and their adventures. Their names are Derrick Daniel Riley and Steven Gallacher. The book starts with telling the reader how the two friends met. It's amazing how a fight between them would be the begining of a beautiful friendship. Apparently the place they live is one of the most dangerous places around. To start of with there's Strangler Joe who is on the loose and strangling innocent little children. Then there's the brick layer who throws bricks at anyone he sees when his train comes by.. Apparently he once brought his wife and kids with him to work, when some kids came and chucked a stone at the bridge where his wife and kids were and loose bricks came and fell on them. They died. Now he wants revenge. And there's also Duffy and his gang bullying everyone younger and smaller than himself. Derrick and Steven have an interest in birds eggs. They know the difference between a good egg and a bad egg. They have a den underneath a big long pipe. They wait in their den for some people to come. On the pipe there's scratched in signatures of Duffy's gang and other gangs. Even Strangler Joe has his signature on it. Derrick and Steven have their signatures on, but underneath, on the bottom of the pipe, so no one finds out they go there. But unfortunately they have big arguments that lead to fights. Gal usually wins because he's bigger. I enjoyed this book because it's interesting to find out what other friends get up to. But unfortunately I couldn't understand all of it.

| Witch Child | Celia Rees | Historical | 5 | |
Review by: Hayley Peace Class: 3 I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any one. The main character in the book was a girl called Mary. It is set in the seventeenth century when being a witch wasn't a good thing. Her grandmother was captured by the witch hunters and she was hung. Mary is then taken away from her community and put on a ship bound for America. The journey to America is hard as it takes weeks to get there and all the passengers are hungry and dehydrated. On the ship Mary makes many friends and discovers new skills in birthing women. However, when the ship runs into trouble Mary is forced to keep her head down as people on the ship also fear witches. Her good friends Rebekah and Martha take care of her. On the ship she meets Jack and they begin meeting in secret. One day Mary sees Jack's past, present and future and realises he's not for her. The story is also set in America, The New World at a time when the Europeans are emigrating for a new life. They arrive in the town of Salem. The people there are hospitable, but others want to leave in search of their families in another town. Mary goes with them to the other town. Pople here also fear witches and as it is on the edge of a forest they fear what is in the forest. Mary is not scared and ventures into the forest where she meets an Indian boy called Jaybird. The two become very good friends. At the end of the novel she realises how he has helped her as she must flee for her life. The story is set in the form of a diary and is a great read. Although it is fiction it still seems real. The follow up book is called Sorceress which is also great. I hope I haven't given too much away in telling you how great this book is, but it really is good.! Go on read it!!!!

| Mr. Perfect | Catherine Robinson | Friendships/Relationships | 4 | |
Review by: Melissa Mitchell Class: 3 Mr Perfect is about a girl named Flora who is 17 years old. She has just moved to a bigger house with her mum, dad, brother (Hugh),and sister (Harriet).Flora ends up going out with the most goodlooking boy in school. She couldn't believe how lucky she was until she was almost raped by him in his own house and then the next day at school he humiliated her by writing a really nasty poem about her and pinning it on the school notice board, but really Flora should have thanked him because if she hadn't run away from school being upset then she never would have met Max (Mr Perfect). Max was a thirty year old man who was friends with Flora's parents he was goodlooking, had plenty of money he was actually who any woman would dream of marrying.Flora started to date Max and when she eventually told her parents her dad wouldn't talk to her so she ended up living with Max but things started going down hill and she stopped dating Max. A few months after she stopped dating him he got married to a PA (Melanie Cooper).

| Mates, Dates and Sole Survivors | Cathy Hopkins | Friendships/Relationships | 3 | |
Review by: Chloe Allan Class: 3 I really enjoyed reading this book, as it is meant for people around my age group. It is about a group of girls which are a bit like me and my friends! The characters are really funny, such as Lucy's brother Lal, he comes out with the wrong things at the wrong times but in the end they come out funny! My favourite part of the book is when Lucy and Izzie go to the health spa and meet Lucy's dream boy, or so he is in the end! I would recommend this book, preferably to girls as it is all about them! If you like fun, boys and a good laugh with your friends then this is the book you should read.

| Mates, Dates and Sleepover Secrets | Cathy Hopkins | Friendships/Relationships | 5 | |
Review by: Laura Colebrook Class: 3 This book was absolutely excellent. I loved every bit. It was the kind of book you can't put down and never want to end! The book was about a girl who becomes friends with three other girls after her best friend moves away to South Africa. TJ (the girl) has to try and fit in with her new friends. It is a typical teenage book - 'Mates, Dates and BOYS!!! TJ has a lot of different feelings and it is very well explained. There is plenty gossip going on in this book. With four teenage girls there will be!! The book also keeps up with Hannah (The girl that moved away) in her E-mails and this also causes another story line to follow, but this helps to follow what happenes as TJ explains everything in a nutshell to Hannah. I would recomend the book to the ages of 13-16.

| Bad Girls | Jacqueline Wilson | Friendships/Relationships | 4 | |
Review by: Lisa Wood Class: 3 The book is about a girl called Mandy and she gets bullied by Kym,mSarah and Melanie. Mandy's mother is VERY protective and she doesn't want her little girl to grow up. Mandy lives across the road from a lady who is a childminder and she is looking after a girl who is slightly older than Mandy and she is really cool and into all the latest fashions. Her name is Tanya and she is cheeky, daring and full of fun. Mandy's mother is completely against the idea of Tanya because Mandy's mother thinks that Tanya is a "bad girl" and not the sort of person that she wants her daughter to hang about with.Tanya then starts to shoplift but Mandy tries to ignore it. Tanya tries to scare off Kym, Melanie and Sarah by threatening them but this makes them act worse towards Mandy. Mandy is sure that Tanya can get her out of trouble, not into it....or could she?? I think this book is excellent and I would recommend it to people who are into girly books.

| Midnight | Jacqueline Wilson | Friendships/Relationships | 4 | |
Review by: Kirsty Skene Class: 3 "Midnight" by Jacqueline Wilson is a great book. I thought it was a very good storyline that is very easy to follow. It's is about a girl and her brother. The brother is a little nasty to his sister, as he likes to play scary games. One day he told his sister to play with him, they played 'Blind-Mans-Buff'. But the sister was terrified, and what terrified her even more was when her brother took her outside, and into the deserted next door house. Her brother made her climb through the window, up the stairs, then up into the attic. To both of their surprise, they weren't alone. There were bats! She hates bats! They both ran out, the girl was in tears. Her brother is so upset, as his Gran told him he is adopted! Also the girl loves fairies, and has all the book's to a mysterious author that no one has seen. Neither has she until she ran out of the house when she caught her brother kissing her best friend! I think that this book is good for anyone from Primary 5 upwards. This is a great book, recommended to all!

| Blue | Sue Mayfield | Friendships/Relationships | 5 | |
Review by: Hayley Lees Class: 4 Blue is written from three different points of view and tells the story of a girl, Anna, who moves to a new school and makes friends with a girl but the girl then begins to bully Anna. This ultimately results in Anna's suicide attempt. I think that the book shows what can happen in a typical bullying scenario and shows how far it can really go. It makes you think about things that you might have done that could have made people feel bad when you didn't mean to. It would appeal to anyone between the ages of 14 and 18 but is probably mainly aimed towards girls. The main themes in the book are friendship, change, revenge and jealousy. These themes are shown in the way that Anna is bullied and how she deals with what is happening. The way that the book is written lets you know how Anna feels, how her friends feel and how her mother feels to find out about what her daughter was going through.

Review by: Caitlin Brooks Class: 1 Hayley is the most popular girl in school and Hayley wants to be best friends with Anna a quiet, anorexic girl who doesn't have many friends. Hayley gets to be Anna's best friend but Hayley's friendship comes at a price. This book would suit older girls as it tells you what it is like to be anorexic and be manipulated by people. It makes you think about bullying as Anna was being bullied by Hayley although she was supposed to be her friend.

| Double Act | Jacqueline Wilson | Friendships/Relationships | 5 | |
Review by: Leanne Monaghan Class: 4 Double Act is another fantastic book by Jacqueline Wilson and it tells the story of identical twins Ruby and Garnet. The twins are very close at the beginning of the book and wear the same clothes and do everything together. Their mother passed away away three years earlier and this allowed an even bigger bond to form between them as they had to grieve for their mother. Throughout the book, the girls start to realise they have different interests and that they are not as identical as they first thought. One of the things that is a real challenge for the girls is when they apply for a scholarship. One of the girls gets in and the other doesn't After this Ruby, who got rejected, was withdrawn and hurt. Instead of dressing the same, she made a point of wearing different clothes and wearing her hair in a different way. Garnet was confused, she didn't understand why her sister was acting the way she was. When Garnet tried to copy her sister's hair, her sister cut if off! I think this book is a good reflection on how twins in the real world may behave. It might be difficult to part from a twin who has been a part of your live forever. It shows the character change of two girls who appear the same to two girls who want to be induvidals. I would recommend this book to girls aged 10-14. Its exciting, gripping and very true to life!

| Danny the Champion of the World | Roald Dahl | Friendships/Relationships | 5 | |
Review by: Laura Milligan Class: 4 Danny The Champion Of The World is a superb book to read, although I did read it when I was younger it always remains as my favourite book that I have ever read. The genre of the book is family as it is about a father and son who grow up together and how it shows their relationship towards each other becoming closer. I would recommend this book for all ages as it shows you the ups and downs of an ordinary family, father and son how they have fallouts but then afterwards have heart to heart talks, which clearly shows their relationship becoming closer. It also reflects very well on how their relationship become a lot closer than before. A good novel I think, should have themes, characters and also negative points too, which this novel definitely has so this is why I like it so much. This is the ultimate book to read because it is about an ordinary family who grow up together and shows their life stories.

| The Broken Bridge | Philip Pullman | Friendships/Relationships | 4 | |
Review by: Jacqui Skene Class: 2 The Broken Bridge is about a sixteen year old black girl living in Wales called Ginny Howard. She lives with her white Dad because her mother died when she was born and she is an only child, or at least that's what he told her. They have a visit from a social worker called Wendy Stevens who talks to her dad about something they won't tell her. Ginny's father eventually told her she had a half brother called Robert and his mother was dying. So Robert had to go and stay with them. At first they didn't get on, but Ginny learned of a story about how a bridge became broken. She learned about a religion in Haiti (where her mother came from) called Voodoo from a friend of a friend. Ginny heard a rumour that her father had been in prison but couldn't bring herself to ask him. Ginny began to feel as if something was being hidden from her. So she and Robert went to visit their grandparents that only Ginny had met when she was 3. They discovered that Ginny's mum was still alive. Then when they got home Ginny and Robert got along a lot better and found they understood each other. That's why I think the broken bridge was such a good book.

The other reason why it is good is because it has a Scottish dictionary in the middle so for any person who doesn't understand slang there's a 'just go to the middle'. Its best point is all the pretend newspaper captions about William Wallace and other Scots and some English men. The thing that kept me reading was how funny it was.

Review by: Sebastien Murray Class: 1 Michael is a teenager who lives with his Mum, Dad and his sick baby sister. They are moving to an old wreck of a house. Michael doesn't like the fact that the house's previous owner ( The Pensioner Ernie ) was found dead under his table. Michael also doesn't like the fact that the house is all dusty and is not good for his baby sister who gets a doctor in to see her every now and then. But then it all changes when he explores the garage that is joined to the house. He is told not to go in there because it's unsafe and could collapse any minute. It is full of spiders, woodlice and dead bluebottles. He looks about into a corner. There he finds a creature that looks a bit like a human. The creature wants to just stay there and die. All he asks of Michael is to bring him beer and Chinese take-away food. Soon after this strange encounter he makes friends with his next door neighbour Mina who is just about the same age as him. She is obsessed with birds. Soon she tells him a secret and then Michael decides to tell her about the creature. They then manage to take him to a safe and secret place. They find out that his name is Skellig and find out he has wings. They are almost sure he's an angel. At this point Michael's baby sister is in hospital and is quite ill. Then a miracle happens and the baby is better. His Mum says that she dreamt that a creature of some sort was next to the baby and healed her. After this Michael and Mina go back to see Skellig. It appears that he was getting better and had his strength back. He was going away. They said Goodbye to him and then they never saw him again.I enjoyed this book because the Author had a good imagination and it was a quite enjoyable book.

Review by: Andrew Hogarth Class: 1 This is a book that demands attention. It is a three-in-one book that are called The Night Bus, The Hitchhiker and The Man With The Yellow Face. These are great thrillers but The Man With The Yellow Face is the best of the three. It is a freaky tale that is about a boy who goes in a photo booth and gets four pictures but to his horror one of the pictures is not of him but of a man with a yellow face! I think that you should read this for an exciting thrill!!!

When they were at the beach their house had a major fire and as a result both of their parents died. The three of them now have to stay with the only relative left in their family, their Uncle Olaf. Review by: Hayley Peace Class: 2 Stargirl is a very moving and dramatic book about first love. The day Stargirl comes to MECCA turns Leo's normal life upside down. He falls in love with her, but they are forced to test their love for each other when the school turns against them. I felt that the author of Stargirl used very good descriptive text to move the reader and describe the characters. As I was reading this book I felt like I knew the characters more and more as I read on. The characters were so real that sometimes it was hard to believe this was just a story. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a very romantic love story full of passion and drama! This book would be great for readers between 12-16 years of age. I think they to would definitely agree with me.However I have purposely missed out the bad points because they would put me off. There aren't many and I shall still keep them to myself!

Review by: Andrew Watson Class: 1 Before I start I must first tell you that this book was written before man had even learnt to fly. So it is a great achievement for this book to be so modern. The story is based in late 19th century England and it is written as though the author was there in the story. When huge metallic cylinders fall from Mars and reveal unearthly creatures with 10 tentacles and no obvious body (apart from a head). The disaster soon begins when deep inside the pits created by the fallen cylinders Martians build 3 legged fighting machines as tall as a house with lethal poison gas and mysterious "Heat Rays". Is it the end for mankind? A real classic, I would recommended this to anyone aged 12 or over because it is a real thriller with an unexpected ending.

| The Fib and Other Stories | George Layton | Short Stories | 4 | |
Review by: Sam Torrance Class: 2 think this book is good because it has humour and it is not hard to understand. This book was good because it is in short stories. Some of the stories were better than others. I would recomend this book for P7 - S2. It was about a boy's life when he meets times were he wants to do things but his mum doesn't let him. One time his class were going on a camping trip but his mum wouldn't let him.So he told the teacher he wasn't allowed to go but he really wanted to go. So the teacher wrote a note to his mum and when he got home he gave the letter to his mum. His mum said that he was allowed to go. So Harry went up to get packed to go on the trip. When he got there he was in the same tent as his worst friend and he wanted to go home again. I liked this book because I found it funny and some of it was a bit like my life. The first story I thought was the best because it was really weird and also the second one because that deals with aliens and this alien club and all the members are aliens and they get new leaders all the time and they devour them all. I would recomend that people read this if you want to have nightmares every time you read it.

| Everything's Eventual | Stephen King | Short Stories | 5 | |
Review by: Graeme Kellington Class: 4 Everything's Eventual by Stephen King is a book of short horror stories that will have you sleeping with the light on for weeks. Before reading the book it is almost expected that it will have been written to give you nightmares and it doesn't disappoint. Every story in the book is different from another so it is a different scare every time you read a new story. The stories range from topic to topic. My personal favourite is a story about a little boy who goes out on a fishing trip for his family. Whilst out on this trip he meets a very strange man, who turns out to be the devil! Throughout the story the devil makes lots of little comments to the boy about his family. He does this in order to try and persuade the boy that he has nothing to live for so the devil can eat him. The whole book is full of short stories that are just as scary and strange as this one. This book is probably one of the best books that Stephen King has written and I would recommend it to everyone who likes to read horror, as it is full of scary and gruesome storylines. It is also good because you aren't reading the same thing over and over again. Even if you are not to keen on reading and don't read very often then it is a very good book because it is all short stories. This allows you to read a story at a time and not the whole books in pieces. For this particular reason the book appealed to me as I could read a story whenever I wanted.

Review by: Laura Milligan Class: 3 This book was fabulous. It was about a child who got abused when he was younger by his mum. Some of the things his mum used to do to him like make him be sick then he had to eat it.It just made me cry. This book was very good because although the boy got abused it just showed me what some people our age get done to them and also how the boy was brave enough to tell the whole world what he went through. Although the book made me cry and it was very sad I still did enjoy it. I recommend this book to anyone who gets abused just to show them they are not the only ones that get abused or someone who likes sad stories which will make them cry. I was glad that there was a happy ending that he got away because it made me feel better that he didn't still get abused. You should read the book today because it is excellent. | A Child Called 'It' | Dave Pelzer | Autobiography/Biography | 5
Review by: Claire Milligan Class: 4 A Child Called It' is based on a true story about a boy who is the actual author describing his childhood. He describes his childhood as being a nightmare because he describes how he got abused by his own mum. He does explain at first though that he enjoyed his life because he had a loving family and they did a lot together but then he describes how at the age of six his mother turned in to an abusive alcoholic. She turns really horrible towards him by making him do loads of horrible stuff. For example eating the contents of his brother's nappies and always having to do the dishes. In the end though he manages to run away. The main themes in this novel are fear, hate and love. Fear is a theme in this novel because he gets made to sleep down in the basement the whole time and he is frightened as to what punishment he has to do next. Hate because he really hates his mother for the way she has treated him and she will never be able to forgive him. Love because his dad tries to stick up for him but he is out working a lot and is hardly ever at home. really liked this novel because I like how it was based on a true story and the author was the actual boy because he expressed his feelings a lot. When I read it I felt as if I was actually there because from the start of the book I got in to it. I felt really sad as well becasue Dave lived a nightmare and I really felt as if I was wanting to stick up for him. It really brought a tear to my eye. I would recommend this to anyone of the ages of about twelve onwards. This is because it really lets your emotions run high. I think the message it is trying to get across is to be grateful for what you have got and don't take things for granted.

| A Child Called 'It' | Dave Pelzer | Autobiography/Biography | 5 | |
Review by: Joanna Brooks Class: 1 A Child Called 'It' is a very emotional book that will almost have you in tears. It is a true story about a young boy whose mother is a crazy woman who abuses him but she is so vicious she nearly kills him; "out of the corner of my eye I saw a blurred object fly from her hand. A sharp pain erupted from my stomach". She had stabbed him! Dave, after years of abuse, had lost all his dignity and respect. He only had hate left in his heart and even hated his father who had stuck up for him throughout this lonesome fight for survival. As she does for everyone she turned him against his own son and also his brothers! She starves him for ten days util he eventually steals food from his classmates' packed lunches. 'It' as she calls him has no hope and he nearly gives up. Dave's mum has no right to be even within a mile of a child by the way she treated Dave. This story is not for the faint hearted but it would be just the right book for just about anyone else! It is suitable for children over the age of 12.

| A Child Called 'It' | Dave Pelzer | Autobiography/Biography | 5 | |
Review by: Sarah Brotherston Class: 1 A Child Called 'It' is an amazing book. How can one mother ruin a boys life so much? A family from America had had a happy life when they were young but soon David became the slave of the family and was known as 'It' to everyone. Dave was abused so much that he was scared to tell anyone about how he was treated, he even struggled to tell his dad who tried to help him out,"Father...Mo...Mo... Mother stabbed me." Dave was one of four children but was the only one who was starved. Dad left the family and Dave was traumatized. Two books follow on from this and take you right through to Dave's adulthood when he lived away from home, and finally forgave his mother! I recommend this book to students of my age and above although I don't think it is a book for men!

| The Lost Boy | Dave Pelzer | Autobiography/Biography | 5 | |
Review by: Tom Allan Class: 4 In "The Lost Boy," the story describes the period in which the bewildered child, haunted by the fear of being returned to his mad and alcoholic mother, is passed between lots of different foster care homes. For six years, David Pelzer was sent to over ten different foster homes; sometimes returning to the same home twice. David's desperate attempts to be accepted by his peers led him into a life of crime, which included cruel tricks his "friends" played on him, including stealing, and ending up going to "The Hill." This was a nickname for "Hillcrest," a juvenile detention centre for boys who did wrong things. After overcoming a trial to be free from his Mother, David (at this time 12 years old), begins his long journey from recovering from years of brainwashing by his Mother; stealing from local groceries and toy stores, and often going into a stage of badness and being mean to others. David's life story made me feel as if I have got a perfect, because I have not had to go through any of the things he did. I think this book is absolutely great and I recommend it to anyone.

| Face | Benjamin Zephaniah | Mystery/Thriller | 5 | |
Review by: Sarah Brotherston Class: 2 Face by Benjamin Zephaniah was a really good book especially for readers of 13-16 years old as it was based on people of that age. Martin is the 'leader ' of his gang of three, and was popular with lots of people his own age and above. Martin, Mark and Matthew are always 3enjoyed being out on the streets and there Martin would meet up with his girlfriend, Natalie. It was the summer holidays and the gang of three were out looking for action. They had been to the fair with Natalie and they'd been out on the street where car stereos were thudding and one night they decided to go to the arcade. At the arcade Natalie picked up a leaflet for a club called Dance-mania, it turned out that the club was a rap club and Martin loved rap. So on Saturday night the gang and Natalie went to the club. It had been a good night, Martin had won a dance competition and everyone had enjoyed it, but when it was time to leave a car pulled up behind the gang. It was Martin's older friend, Pete Mosley and the driver was a strange looking man known as Apache. Pete offered the gang a lift home with them and Matthew refused but Mark and Martin were not sure. Matthew headed home and Martin and Mark got into the car. Apache began to go over the speed limit and the police were chasing them! They were coming to a crossroads with the police behind them and Apache decided it would be safe to keep going. They crashed, the car caught fire and turned over onto its roof. Mark managed to escape, Martin got trapped and suffered really bad facial injuries and needed to have an operation and Pete died. Martin's face was going to be damaged for ever but he recovered from the crash. Eventually Mark and Matthew did not want to be his friend and Natalie went off with another boy. Martin calmed down a lot and was asked to become the captain of the gymnastics team! I really enjoyed reading this book and I think Benjamin Zephaniah is a very good author!

| The Tiger in the Well | Philip Pullman | Mystery/Thriller | 5 | |
Review by: Tracy Kerr Class: 2 The story has been made and set in 1881. The main character of this book is called Tzaddik. Tzaddik is a man that everyone fears as they don't actually know whether he is actually a man or something else. Many people have not seen him going around and that's why they fear him so much because if ever he is out they try there very best to avoid him. They describe Tzaddik as this; he squats like a fat, malevolent spider hidden at the centre of a web of international misery and mayhem. The people of the place where Tzaddik lives don't usually come out at night as it is said to be that Tzaddik comes out at this time. Tzaddik does not have many friends in his village and always has wanted to have a lot of friends in his lifetime. The book is an excellent one because the way that there is some people who are really friendly and there are people who hate each other. Tzaddik has a total of one really good friend, which is his dybbak servant. I really enjoyed reading this book and I would most definitely read it again. I also liked this book because it had different types of genres: Sad, Happy and In-between. My favourite part was the beginning because I enjoyed reading about the different characters and as soon as I had read the first few chapters I wanted to read the rest of them so quickly to find out what happened to Tzaddik and his Dybbak servant.

| Face | Benjamin Zephaniah | Friendships/Relationships | 5 | |

| The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time | Mark Haddon | Mystery/Thriller | 5 | |
Review by: Sarah Brotherston Class: 2 ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ by Mark Haddon is a really good book for every one above the age of about 10. I enjoyed reading this book as it was really exciting and held your attention well, although when reading it you had to have 100% focus on it as on every second chapter Christopher Boone would begin describing in depth about something that has been going on in the story. The story is about a boy named Christopher, who has a photographic memory, and he is very good at maths and physics but he has difficulty understanding other human beings. This book shows an example of his disability when his next-door neighbour Mrs Shear’s dog was found dead with a garden fork through its body, in her front garden and he was the one to first find it.As he was the only one around when Mrs Shears came out she suspected it was him and that is the main reason why Christopher decided to investigate who killed Wellington the dog. When he began his investigation he first came to Mr Shears who had left Mrs Shears not long before and wanted to hurt her in some way, so he went on to find out about Mr Shears. But when he was doing this his dad became very unhappy about it and Christopher soon found out why as when he was looking for his notebook on the investigation, that his dad had taken away and hid from him he found letters from his mother addressed to him. But what confused him was that his father had told him that his mum had died of a heart attack. Soon after this he asked his dad and his dad got very cross and told Christopher that he had killed Wellington and he had lied by saying his mother was dead because she had really left him for Roger Shears. Christopher did not like living with a liar and a murderer so he went on a mission to find his mum’s house in London. He then stayed with his mum for a while until his dad came and started an argument but the police sent him home. Eventually he went back home with his mother to sit his ‘A’ levels and surprisingly stayed with his dad. I thought this was an excellent book and I would recommend it to anyone over 10 years old!

| Sabrial (not available in school library) | Garth Nix | Magic/Witchcraft | magic / death | 4 |
Review by: Olivia Bader Class: 1 ‘Sabrial’ by Garth Mix is a fantasy adventure story about magic and death. It is about a young girl called Sabrial whose father is the famous necromancer Abhorsen. Her father is kidnapped by an evil living dead necromancer and she must learn magic and try and save him. The main characters in the story are Sabrial, Mogget who is a human bound by magic to make him a cat with the power of speech and Hedge, an evil necromancer brought back to life. The book is set in an old kingdom where magic spirits have taken over. It is a good book because of the way it is written and the way the author has made up a whole way of living for the characters. I would recommend this book to boys and girls older than 13 because of the complex storyline.

They have to keep this a secret and they can’t tell a sole not even their best friend. The family fly about outside at night-time. The book is magical and to me it is the best book I have ever read. Secrets and stories are spread about other members of the Hansen family. Conflict and fighting is also in the family. The author has introduced the characters great and the characters are great to read about throughout the whole story. | Victoria and the Rogue | Meg Cabot | Romance | 4
Review by: Shannon Hanson Class: 1 ‘Victoria and the Rogue’ by Meg Cabot is a romantic story about a 16 year old girl who has travelled over from India. She did this with her uncles because both her parents died but on the good side they left her with a fortune and if you read the book you will see how this could be a bad thing too. On the boat she meets two men , Captain Carstairs who she finds extremely annoying as Victoria has a habit of telling people what to do and he won’t obey her commands and Lord Malfrey [Hugo who she quite likes at first .] When she docks at London she is greeted by the family she will now live with whose family members are . Rebecca who is a kind 17 year old cousin to Victoria and also Rebecca’s little sister Clara 14 is very welcoming .Next the aunt and uncle like the rest of the family are really nice even though the uncle doesn’t say much. The story is set in a rich street in London. Now for my star rating well I think it deserves to get 4 stars because it never let you get boredand with hardly ever a dull moment. This book I think would be a good read for girls my age

| The Cat Mummy | Jacqueline Wilson | Friendships/Relationships | family | 4 |
Review by: Sarah Younger Class: 1 The main characters of this book are Verity, Gran, Granddad, Mabel, Dad and Verity’s friends. Her teacher is also in the book. The setting of the book was mainly in Verity’s house, although there was time spent at school too. But at one point in the book Verity and her Dad put up posters all over town, so there are parts of the story where time in the story is out of school and Verity’s house. This story was a good book because at the end of each chapter it left you with a cliffhanger and I had to keep going, as I really wanted to find out more things about the story. But I am glad it has a happy ending which was quite funny. I would recommend this book to S1/S2 girls as I think a boy wouldn’t take much interest about a girl and her cat.

| The Hundred-Mile-An-Hour Dog | Jeremy Strong | Adventure | prove yourself | 4 |
Review by: Kevin Dryden Class: 1 In this book the main characters are Harvey, his dog Streaker and his friend.Harvey hated walking his dog Streaker because she was that fast. When the Easter holidays came he was asked by his mum to walk Streaker , for all of the Easter holidays and he said NO straight away ,but then she offered him £30 to do it and he said yes as soon as she said it. He was busy thinking of ways on how to walk Streaker and he thought of roller blades, so Streaker could pull him along. That didn’t work because when Streaker was pulling him along he caught an old ladies handbag and she started to shout “he stole my handbag” then the police came and took him to the police station. Since that didn’t work he went and got his friend to help him train Streaker, then they met the policeman’s son and they made a bet to see who could train their dog before the last day of the Easter holidays. Trevor and his friend won the bet. I thought that the book was good and if anyone wants to read it I think they should.

| The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy | Douglas Adams | Science Fiction | humour, mindless plot | 4 |
Review by: George Knox Class: 1 The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has much humour which has little relevance to the main plot. In fact, there was a whole chapter that would have been omitted entirely, but hey, it was funny. (It was of the thoughts of a sperm whale falling to the ground after it had been changed from a nuclear missile into its current state.) However, the humour in the book makes up the majority of the text, rather than the plot. (Which is questionable, but also humorous.) So it would have been a bad idea to remove the humour, because the book would only be about half the size, and the plot would be fairly… mediocre on its own. However, the humour is brilliantly funny. Any quick witted (or just simply just not slow witted) person should find the tales of Arthur Dent funny from the time he wakes up to find that his house is going to be demolished to create a bypass, then the entire Earth to create a hyperspatial bypass to the time super intelligent trans-universal white mice try to hack up his brain to find the question of life. (The answer being 42.) After the destruction of Earth is announced, Arthur’s friend, Ford Prefect (who he has no idea is a stranded alien who was researching for the Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Revised Edition until then) rescues him and they board the demolition ships, hitchhiking while the rest of humanity perishes, then are thrown through the airlock, only to land inside a passing ship, the Heart of Gold, flying on the Improbability Drive, which, as its name suggests, does highly improbable things, such as flying through hitchhikers and picking them up. There, the two travellers meet Galactic President Zaphod Beeblebrox, who is incidentally Ford’s semi cousin, who is being tracked by the authorities for stealing the Heart of Gold, Trillian, Zaphod’s wife, and Marvin, the Paranoid Android. He is, in my opinion, the best character in the book, a prototype robot, with a personality engine, which causes him to be depressed. “I think you’d like to know I’m feeling very depressed,” and “You don’t like talking to me, do you?” are two of his most common phrases. By using the Improbability Drive, they navigate their way to a long forgotten planet which was had legends of planet builders which were immensely rich. (However, most stories were disregarded as rubbish.) It is there that they encounter two white mice, the ones who turn out to be using Earth to find the Question of Life (which was destroyed five minutes before the program would be complete) and need a new Earth, but since they find an Earthling, they just need his brain cut up to complete the process. To find out what happens you must read the book, which I would recommend to anyone except for those that are overly serious. It was an extremely enjoyable laugh-a-minute to me, except for its shortness and slightly odd plot.

Review by: Fionn Page Class: 1 I chose this book because my little sister has watched the TV show based on the book. v It takes place in many different places which are Gemma’s house, Alice’s house, Alice’s new house in Scotland and at school. v The main characters are Gemma, Alice, Granddad and Biscuits. v The part that I remember most is when Gemma shoves the cake her and Biscuits made in Flora’s face. v Gemma tells the story in her point of view. v At the end of the book Alice gave Gemma her lucky charm bracelet. I was happy for Gemma (I was even happier now that there was a new charm on it). The new charm was heart shaped and had three simple words on it: Best friends forever. v I liked “Best Friends” because of the way Gemma over acted and wanted to spend all of their lives together and be best friends together. v The language is easy but some words are a bit confusing but apart from those few words even my little sister would understand. v I didn’t learn anything from this book but it was funny (at times).

Hayley Parkin has been asked to look after Anna. After a while they become best friends then in about 3-4 days Hayley is different towards Anna. Every one else recognises her behaviour as they have seen it before because Hayley becomes bored with people very easily. Hayley starts picking on Anna and making fun of her accent. Anna is really pretty and she gets a boyfriend called Nick. Hayley is really jealous. The bullying gets worse until one day Anna had had enough and…committed suicide using a bottle of vodka and her mums anti-depressant pills. Anna is taken to hospital and tubes are down her windpipe to help her breath and wires are connected to her. Her mum and dad are there with her all the way and in the end she lives with the horrible feeling of having to face her mum and dad. | The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13¾ | Sue Townsend | Diaries/Confessions | 4½
Review by: Emily Jones Class: 1 Adrian Mole is an average teenage boy. He has to deal with the normal things like watching his dad get drunk, major spots and the love of his life, Pandora, going out with his best friend. The main characters in this book are: Adrian Mole – aged 13¾ Nigel – Adrian’s best friend. He always has all the latest gear to boast about which annoys Adrian to no end. Pandora – She is the new girl at Adrian’s school. He claims that she is the love of his life but she takes her time to give in to his charms Bert Baxter – He is an old man who lives in an old and dirty house with his dog Sabre. When Adrian joins the Samaritans he is paired up with Bert and he has to go and see him every week. I thought this book was great. I really liked how it was in diary form and that the author put in every single little detail. I am now reading the next book in the series and I hope I will enjoy it just as much. I would recommend this book to anyone aged from about 13 to an adult.

| Blue | Sue Mayfield | Diaries/Confessions | bullying/friendship | 5 |
Review by: Amy Nichol Class: 1 ‘Blue’ was a really good book. The author was Sue Mayfield. I have read a few of her books but Blue was the best. The main character is Anna Goldsmith aged fourteen. Her best friend is Hayley Parkin but everything turns upside down for Anna. Hayley doesn’t talk to her anymore and writes messages like “Teachers pet” and “Anna suck-up Goldsmith”. The messages get worse and Hayley started to do physical bullying like tripping her up in class. Things got worse then one day Anna took an overdose of some anti-depressant pills (about 11) and half a bottle of vodka. She was found by her mum in the bathroom with her diary. Part of this book is Anna’s mum in the hospital reading Anna’s diary, finding out why Anna felt so bad to want to die. Anna had left a letter for Hayley and explained how bad she had made Anna’s life become - here’s some of it: Hayley, “If I called you a murderer would that be to strong a word? By the time you read this I will be dead. That was what you wanted all along, wasn’t it? To get rid of me completely. Character assassination, they call it.” This book showed me how harmful and powerful bullying can be and make people feel. Blue was a very sad book. Here is a poem that I like which the author used to describe how Anna felt. It is called Not Waving, But Drowning. Nobody heard him, the dead man But still he lay moaning: I was much further out than you thought And not waving but drowning… …I was much too far out all my life And not waving but drowning. I would mark this book ten out of ten. I would recommend this book Blue for children aged between 12-18 so if a victim of bullying reads this they will know they are not alone.

Harry is then sent to live with his horrible uncle. He is then informed by Hagrid the school caretaker that he is a wizard and has to go to Hogwarts a school of magic. Hagrid is a funny character and is always helping Harry and his friends. His friends are Ron and Hermione. Hermione is a very smart person and Ron is funny and stupid. The main idea is that Harry and his friends think that someone is trying to steal a special stone that gives everlasting life. One night Harry and his friends try to stop the thief. There are lots of puzzles and dangerous Monsters on the way to the stone but will they make it in time? The book was fun to read but would be hard for young children.

| The Amulet of Samarkand | Jonathan Stroud (not available in school library) | Fantasy | 4 ¾ | |
Review by: Celia Ledgerwood-Walker Class: 1 In a London, where magicians rule and commoners are left struggling to keep out of their way, Nathaniel is apprenticed to a second rate, suck up magician. At one of his masters’ parties he creates a fearful enemy in Simon Lovelace. Determined to get revenge Nathaniel studies against his masters will in dangerous magic. After years of endless struggle he finally manages to summon a djinni named Bartimaeus (in this London magicians get daemons of all shapes and sizes to do all their dirty work.) Nathaniel sends Bartimaeus to Lovelace’s house to steal his beloved Amulet Of Samarkand! With this he sets up his master to look like the robber. Nathaniel thinks this is a perfectly innocent robbery (if robberies can be considered as innocent) but he finds an underlying plot to destroy London’s Parliament and assassinate the prime minister. This leads Nathaniel on a quest to save London and its Prime Minister and also to stop Lovelace from fulfilling his sinister plans. With Bartimaeus by his side he sets of to discover his destiny. My Views: I found this book fabulously gripping and intelligently written. Bartimaeus’ character brings wit and charm to the book and Nathaniel’s character brings a certain innocence. I would recommend this book to any confident ,older reader who enjoys a book you cannot put down.

| Fantastic Mr. Fox | Roald Dahl | Adventure | 4 | |
Review by: Natasha Hewson Class: 1 I took this book because it wasn’t that long and wasn’t that short. The book sounded very good because I had a little look on the blurb on the back. This book took place in a fox’s den and on three farms. The farmers are called Boggis, Bunce and Bean. The main characters in the book are Boggis, Bunce, Bean and Mr Fox and his family. I think the best part in the book was when all the farmers are getting sick of Mr Fox stealing food from their farms. Mr Fox is the person that tells the story. The funniest part was when Mr Fox always ended up getting a chicken or a turkey for their dinner. I enjoyed the book because most books are very long and boring. The language that was used was easy to understand. I did not learn anything from reading this book because it was not a fact book. I would recommend the book to anyone who likes reading short books.

| Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets | J.K. Rowling | Fantasy | adventure / magic | 4 |
Review by: Peter Watson Class: 1 This book is the second in the series. It is about a boy called Harry Potter who lives with his aunt, uncle and his cousin Dudley. He goes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. A house elf called Dobby appears in his room and tells him he can’t go back to school because there is a plot to kill him. Harry goes back but strange things happen - he can talk to snakes, a bludger almost kills him in a quiditch match, he can hear voices in the wall that no one else can hear and people are getting petrified and most of the school suspects Harry. My favourite part of the book was when Harry had to fight the monster down in the chamber and save Ron’s sister Ginny by destroying the diary that was possessing her. I thought this was a good book I would recommend this and the other books if you like fantasy/adventure books.

| The Toilet of Doom | Michael Lawrence | Diaries/Confessions | friendship | 4 |
Review by: Laura Connell Class: 1 The book is a diary of Jiggy McCue and his two best friends Angie and Pete. During the story they discover a weird computer game called the Toilet of Life, which makes you swap lives [and bodies] with the person who is in the room with you. In the story Jiggy and Angie are the ones who swap bodies. But the real problem is that they don’t know how to change back and the only one who does has just left home due to their horrible dad and no one can find him. Jiggy and Angie then have to live for several days as each other, go to school as each other and live in each others home. My favourite part of the book was just after Angie and Jiggy swap and are still trying to get used to being each other. I think the author of the book describes what they are feeling really well and that is one of the main reasons the book is so good. I was really enjoying the book until I got to the end. I was expecting a better ending. I was expecting the ending to be a lot longer too - I was surprised it ended when it did. But I think the quality of the rest of the book makes up for the unexpected, disappointing ending. I also think that the book wouldn’t be as good if I had not read the other books in the series before. But apart from that I would recommend this book and the other books in the series to anyone. I think the people who would enjoy these books best are people that like to read books that make you laugh page after page.

| Space Wolf (not available in school library) | William King | Science Fiction | adventure | 5 |
Review by: Jamie Norman Class: 1 The book I am writing about is called ‘Space Wolf’ by William King. I picked this book because it had a good prologue. The story takes place in the year 41,000 and is set on the desolate death world of Fenris where the sparse population face a daily battle for survival against lethal monsters and marauding warriors.” Anger at the interlopers filled him. He felt it as keenly as any of the survivors of the attack and massacre when the Thunderfist tribe had come from the sea to claim the land in force”. I like this book because it changes from one form of scene to another very quickly. “Soon the singing was over and it was time to dance”. About 10 minutes later this is the scene. “Ragnar tumbled forwards into the darkness in which he knew death waited to welcome him”. The main character is Ragnar Blackmane the son of a chieftain. His tribe is brutally murdered and he is brought back from death by the Space Wolf space marines serving the all father. There are 3 more books in the collection: Ragnar’s Claw, Grey Hunter and Wolfblade. They can be purchased at www.blacklibrary.com I hope you enjoyed my book report.

| Why the Whales Came | Michael Morpurgo | Adventure | 4.5 | |
Review by: Rachel Butler Class: 1 This book is about a girl called Gracie and a boy called Daniel. They live on a small Island in the Scilly isles called Bryer . They build model boats and sail at the beach near their home. One day the sea is too high there so they don’t know what to do. They are warned away from the beach at the birdman’s house. The birdman is an old man who speaks to no-one on the island, he always has a flock of seagulls above him. He is always seen in his boat sailing off to a deserted island called Samson. They go to the birdman’s beach and there is nothing stirring so they sail their boats. The next day they go back and find a half washed away note saying this beach is as much yours as mine. They write back and the next day they go there is a man’s name written in the sand and a dog waiting but luckily it is friendly. They meet the birdman and become friends and he is very good to Gracie’s mother when her dad goes to war. Her dad returns and a whale is washed up and everyone one on the island wants to kill it but the birdman forces them to help get it back to sea or the island will become deserted just like what happened to Samson so every one on the island helps to get it back out to sea!

Review by: Nicki Gotterson Class: 1 I chose this book because of its cover and title it made it stand out. The story takes place in a small town. The main characters are Mandy who’s mum rules her life and is getting bullied by Kim who is the school bully and Tanya who is Mandy’s new best friend. Mandy tells the story. The part of the story I remember most is when Tanya meets Kim for the first time because Tanya stands up for Mandy and I could understand how Mandy would feel. I enjoyed the whole book the best thing is how it makes you think how the character would feel. The language used is understandable and easy. I loved everything and I learned that you shouldn’t be ashamed of who you are. I would recommend this book to ten to thirteen year olds.

| Midnight | Lisa Jeffrey | Adventure | bullying | 5 |
Review by: Lisa Jeffrey Class: 1 I chose this book because it looked eye catching and interesting. The story takes place in Violet’s house in the attic at night. The main characters are: Violet, Will her older brother; he gets replaced by his evil twin who starts causing trouble in and around the house and Jasmine, one of Violets friends. I thought the ending was sad because Will was returned to his normal self and they were crying and hugging. The book is first person narrative and is told through her eyes. I remember the part when they go into the attic and play Blind Mans Buff and Will scares her by telling her she’s being followed. I was quiet scared at this point and I didn’t know what was going to happen next. I enjoyed the entire book and I would definitely read it again. I thought the language used was easy because the writing was big and there weren’t any hard words. I enjoyed the entire book and I learnt that people’s life could change easily. I would recommend this book for somebody that enjoys an adventure story and enjoys Jacqueline Wilson

Review by: Connor Leith Class: 1 An abandoned child on the highway when she was 4 years old. When she was 6 she was found robbing a shop for food. She was put into care and when she was 18 she graduated in university. She found her brother and then met her mum, dad, other brother and sister. She wanted to finally go and live with her family so she went out of care and went to stay in her real home. The characters in this book are Ellina Robertson (abandoned child), Fiona Robertson as the mum, Eddy Robertson as the dad, Sean Robertson as the oldest brother, Fred Robertson as the second oldest brother and Victoria Robertson as the sister. It was taken place in America on the highway and it was also taken place in Miami. The highway was 300 miles from the highways. It is a good book because I like books that are mostly real life. It is also a good book because of all the places, noises, description and the noises. I would recommend this book from ages 8 and over.

The setting is at Ellie’s house, School and at parties. It is a good book because Ellie met a boy called Dan in Wales and she got really annoyed with him. Review by: Emma Lothian Class: 1 It was good because it was like you didn’t know what was going to happen next and it has 2 different scenes 1. In Zaire where the plague broke out. 2. Britain where the plague was brought and broke out within days The reader knows who brought it over and the scientists don’t, it gives people a chance to see what is going on and people are dying every day and you will never know who is going to be infected next. It was the best book I ever read and would recommend it to anyone who is up for a science themed book. And for all ages over 12.

Review by: Matthew Bell Class: 1 A young boy called Craig plays football. He plays as a striker but can’t score any goals, so he takes advice from a phantom footballer that died eight years ago. He takes the advice and the team goes on to win the championship. Craig; plays football but can’t score. Phantom; appears from nowhere and gives advice. Some people take his advice and others run away. The book is set off and on the pitch. It is mainly set on the pitch. This is quite a good book because I like football. I liked the bit when the phantom gives Craig the advice and then the boy just runs away. I would recommend everyone from the age of 5 to 15 years, should read this book. This book would appeal more to boys than girls.

| The Wind Singer | William Nicholson (not available in school library | Fantasy | courage and survival | 4 |
Review by: Rowena Jacobs Class: 1 The book is the first in the trilogy “The Wind On Fire”. I chose this book because I had heard a section of it on the radio and it seemed very exciting. The story takes place in another world. The main characters of this story are a brother and sister called Kestrel and Bowman and their friend Mumpo. The story is told by a third person. I found the language in this book slightly hard because there are a few made up words. At the end of the book Kestrel, Bowman and Mumpo find the silver voice and try to get to Aramanth but the zars are chasing them. The children have to cross a plain with no food or water. They nearly die but then Omchaka comes along. They think it is Ombaraka and that they are saved but instead they are prisoners. The children are about to be hanged but then the zars come. Omchaka decides that if they let the children fly south instead of killing them the zars will follow them and Omchaka will be safe so that is what they do. The children get to Aramanth with the zars on their tail. With a lot of throwing and catching the silver voice is slipped into the wind singer. The wind singer starts singing and the zars dissolve. Everyone forgets examinations and Aramanth is once more. I thought the ending was really unexpected. The part of the story I remember best was when one of the old children strokes Mumpo. I remember this best because I had been scared when I read it. I enjoyed this book because it was funny, unexpected and scary! I would recommend this book to people who like fantasy. I advise people who like real life books not to read it.

| Me (and Charlie) A Life in Bits and Pieces | Rebecca Stevens | Diaries/Confessions | 4 | |
Review by: Gabrielle Penman Class: 1 The plot of this story is that two people both say their side of a story the way they see it. In the story Janet’s mum and dad have split up. She lives with her mum but really wants to see her dad. She said to a girl at school that her dad is a pop star but the girl didn’t believe her so she said that her dad will play at the school concert. She has to go and find him. When she finally found him he said he wouldn’t come and play and told her to go away. When she got home she went to the concert and found her dad playing a song he wrote for her. The main characters were Janet and Charlie who also wrote the story from his view. This story is set round about where Janet lives. I liked it because it was a bit funny and I like diary stories I would recommend it to girls who are about 10-13 years old because it is about a girl who is about that age and it is not really a boy’s story.

| Charmed: Voodoo Moon | Constance M. Burge | Magic/Witchcraft | 4 | |
Review by: Faria Bhuiyan Class: 1 THE PLOT There are three sisters who are witches. They go on holiday to relax but instead find themselves fighting with a powerful demon. THE CHARACTERS There are three sisters. Pru, the oldest, Piper the middle sister and Phoebe, the youngest. Their mum died when they were very young. Their grandmother looked after them until she died. After her death they got their magic powers. THE SETTING The book started with Pru in her car stuck in traffic. She joins her sisters on holiday and that is where most of the story is set. LIKE OR DISLIKE I liked this book because I enjoy magical adventures. Charmed is also a TV programme. The actors who play the sisters are brilliant in their performance. RECOMMEND I think most people would enjoy this story but particularly girls because some boys think these kinds of stories are boring.

Review by: Eilidh Mitchell Class: 1 Georgia goes out with this really popular boy. Every time she sees him she goes bright red. The characters are Georgia, Mark (her boyfriend), Jas (her mate) Mum, Dad, and Dave. It was set at Georgia’s house, Marks house, and at school. The book was funny when Georgia confessed a lot of things. I think girls should read this at an early teenage age because it is not appropriate for little children and a bit ‘’immature’’ for adults.
